Welcome to Maple Class

Meet the team

Mrs Parfrey           Miss Catterall              Mr Williams

English

In English, we will be writing a historical story based on “Stone Age Boy” by Satoshi Kitamura. We will be continuing to focus on using speech punctuation and paragraphs as well as adding historical details to our narrative.

Class Novel

Our class novel is ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. As well as writing books, Ted Hughes also wrote poetry and was the Poet Laureate for 14 years.  During his life, he held a wide range of jobs, including doing the washing up at London Zoo!

Our geography question this term is “How does Warrington compare with other places in the North West?” We will look at economic activity, human and physical features in Warrington and compare these with those found in the Lake District.

In design and technology, we will be constructing and evaluating a castle with a working drawbridge. In music we will be learning about music associated with Chinese New Year before we compose our own glockenspiel melody.  We will be developing our creative skills making paper, then using this to create an Egyptian scroll in art.  In computing, we will learn how to send an email safely. Our RE lessons will have a focus on Christianity this term as we learn about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus and what Christians mean by the Holy Spirit. In Spanish, we will be learning about our families and how to name them in Spanish.

We will start the term developing our multiplication and division skills by learning how to multiply and divide two digit numbers. This is followed by measuring length in metres, centimetres and millimetres and reading scales in grams and kilograms.

Our first topic in Science this term is ‘Forces and Magnets’. The children will be comparing how objects move on different surfaces, classifying materials as magnetic and non-magnetic and investigating the properties of magnets and magnetic forces.

After half term, we will look at ‘Animals Including Humans’. We will focus on getting the right type and amount of nutrition and the role of the skeleton.

The children will be making observations, investigating and taking part in different scientific experiments.

Our History question this term is ‘How did the Iron Age Change Life in the UK?’

We will look at the transition from the Stone Age to the Iron Age and answer questions such as:

What was life like for a Bronze Age child?

What life like in an Iron Age hill fort?

What development would bring most benefit to our tribe?

  • Please ensure that your child has a water bottle in school so that they can have a drink during the day. Refillable bottles are preferable rather than single use plastic bottles.
  • Please ensure that your child has a full Dallam PE kit that is kept in school
  • Your child should be reading at home every evening.  This could be a book from home or a book from school.  Reading records need to be signed each time a child reads and brought into school each day.
  • Times tables or maths practice should be every evening and record books signed.  Please initial and date the sheet at the back of your child’s reading record when they practise their times tables.
  • Homework will go out on a  Friday and is due to be completed by Wednesday.

If you would like any help or further information then please feel free to ask at the end of the school day.

The staff at Dallam are huge advocates of what an amazing tool the big wide web is. We are showing the children in Maple class how to use the internet safely. Please have a read through the links below that the Maple team have put together for you. If you need any advice or to discuss matters further please see us any day at hometime.
