English
Reading is our main priority for learning as we begin the year. We are committed to helping the children learn to read as quickly as we can and appreciate your support with this. The Read Write Inc phonic programme that children started in Ash class will continue into Cedar Class. Children will progress to recognising all of the 40+ sounds by the end of the year and use them fluently when they read.
Writing
As part of our writing curriculum, will be sharing the book ‘Lost and Found’ and learning to write an adventure story. Then we will use the book ‘Nibbles the Book Monster’ to help us to write a diary entry. Our targets this term will be to begin to write a sentence, remembering spaces between words and forming our letters correctly.
Maths
Maths
Our maths work will focus on numbers to 20, recognising and using these numbers in addition and subtraction sentences. We will also be starting our ‘White Rose’ maths books where we will reason about numbers and solve problems. Just like in Ash Class, knowing small number facts is very important, and children will continue to work on their individual maths passport targets.
Science
History
In history, we will be asking
‘How was life different in the past?’
We will explore what homes used to look like inside, what items people used and how toys were different.
Geography

Homework
Learning to read and developing a love of reading
It is incredibly important that children have the opportunity to read as regularly as possible. Not only does being able to read fluently help children in every subject, and therefore find learning easier, but more importantly, we are committed to fostering a love of reading. Your child will bring home a book that is matched to all of the sounds that they know. The book should be easy for them to read and create a feeling of success when reading at home. Please aim for your child to read with you at least three times a week. Reading the book several times helps children to hear themselves ‘be readers’ and they should be encouraged to use a ‘story teller voice’. Children need to keep their reading book in their book bag every day, as sometimes they may be asked to read it to an adult. Books will be changed on a Thursday, ready to go home on Fridays. Your child will also bring home a sharing book for you to enjoy with them. It is not a book that they will be able to read themselves but one to enjoy reading together with you.
Phonics play.
There are some free games in the resources section which are really good for supporting the learning of phonics.

Maths at home
Maths passport challenges will be given to children every week. It is important that children can recall small number facts quickly. Please help your child to practise their Maths challenges regularly. We will also be introducing the children to Numbots which is our online maths platform which helps children to recall number facts in fun, interactive way.
In the coming weeks, children will be introduced to Infinity and Numbots which are our online platforms linked to maths targets and number fluency
Important Reminders
For PE your child needs:
Black Shorts
Blue Dallam Polo Shirt
Trainers
Warm layers such as black/dark tracksuit bottoms for outdoor PE. Children are expected to wear their school jumper in the colder months.
Being prepared
Children are expected to bring their book bags, reading records and maths passport everyday to school. The staff will be checking their reading and maths daily where possible. It is really important that children have a water bottle in school so that they can stay hydrated.
Snack
We have a piece of fruit available for children in school everyday. Children may also like to bring in their own healthy snack. If your child would like toast for snack please send £1 in a named envelope on Friday ready for the following week. Your child is to hand it to a member of staff in the class.
