We are excited to welcome you to Hazel class!
The children in our class have a balanced curriculum which is supported by both the EYFS and the KS1 National Curriculum to help support your child’s development and learning. Children have access to both carpet sessions and continuous provision, which is tailored to meet the development of your child in the following areas of learning:
Personal, Social and emotional development – (PSHE)
Communication and Language development
Physical development – (PE)
Literacy Development – (English)
Mathematical development – (Maths)
Understanding the world – (History/ Geography/ Science/ Languages and Computing)
Expressive arts and design – (Music, Art and Design and Technology)
Attention Autism
- Whole class PE is on a Thursday afternoon with Tom, the sports coach. The children will benefit from a shorter session with less children in to give the opportunity for more 1:1 focused teaching of the skills. Some of the children will also integrate for PE sessions with Year 1 on a Wednesday afternoon where they will be working outside and learning skills associated with Games and Athletics. Please ensure your child has appropriate kit in school, labelled. Trainers are the only footwear permitted for PE. Please also ensure that your child has a suitable bag for storing their PE kit when not in use.
Snack money is £1 per week for toast. It must be paid by the Friday morning for the next week. Monies can be paid by direct bank transfer (speak to the office for details) or by sending cash into school in an envelope with your child’s name, class and amount on the outside. If you prefer your child to have an alternative, please provide suitable snacks daily. Please note that foods containing nuts must not be sent into school for your child’s snack and lunch. Please ensure that you have checked the ingredients list on the items which you are sending into school.
- Please ensure that your child has an appropriate, labelled sun hat and bottle of suncream in school for the year, so that they can wear it when we go outside on hot days. You can also ensure that your child has a water bottle in school for use throughout the day – these can be purchased from the school office. Please ensure that each item sent into school is clearly labelled with your child’s name
Funky Fingers

You can ask your child some questions about their book;
- Where does the story take place?
- Who are the characters?
- Which part of the story do you like best?
- What is happening in the pictures?
- What happens first in the story?
- What happens in the middle of the story?
- What happens at the end of the story?
You can write in the record book to let us know how you are getting on;
- Did your child like the book?
- What was their favourite part?
- Who was their favourite character?
Phonics- Read Write Inc.
Children in Hazel class will have daily phonics sessions linked to our school phonics scheme Read Write inc.
We use a mixture of whole-class, small-group and 1:1 activities to support learning.
We focus on one sound a week, partaking in different sensory mark-making activities to develop fine motor skills and encourage correct letter formations.
Depending on where children are in development, children are encouraged to write sounds, words or sentences.
Maths
We also have a daily Mathematics carpet session. We use Numberblocks to help support our children with their maths skills through the NCETM.
Numberblocks is a pre-school BBC television series aimed at introducing children to early number.
Snappy animation and loveable characters combine with engaging storylines to gently introduce concepts of number to support early mathematical understanding.

“Moving Around My World”
In science, we will explore the seasonal changes which are happening around us – looking out for signs that summer has truly arrived. We will be considering the steps we can take to prepare ourselves for the new season, such as dressing appropriate, wearing a sun hat and applying sun cream. We will also sing the weather song and identify the weather each day!
In computing, the children will be looking at data handling, finding out what data is and how we can use it to help us. For example, we will record the weather each day and find out which type of weather is most common during our summer term.
In RE, we will find out about special places, special objects and what is special about our world. We will be focusing on the religions Christianity, Hinduism and Islam.
In art we will be working with Mr C, a local artist, to practice our drawing skills. We will be working towards developing our drawing particularly in the area of portraits. We will be learning about using different materials and their associated tools to make marks. We will learn about the work of Hanoch Piven, a portrait artist.
In DT we will be doing lots of junk modelling to make different types of transport, as well as thinking about how they move. We will look at adding wheels and an axel to some of our models to make them move on land. Will this be useful to transport that moves in water? We’ll find out!
We will be learning nursery rhymes regularly with a focus on transport, this first half term, including;
Wheels on the bus
- The big ship sails
- Horsey, Horsey don’t you stop
- Down at the station
- A sailor went to sea, sea, sea
- Row, row, row your boat
- We’re driving in our car
