Maths

This term our maths work will continue to follow White Rose Hub maths, moving on to solving addition and subtraction, teens numbers, manipulating shapes, sharing and grouping, and finally patterns, space and mapping.

Writing

Writing is taught through all areas of learning in reception.  The fundamental skills of writing are taught through phonics, drawing club and teacher directed activities and sessions.  Opportunities are then planned for the children to apply their writing skills through play and enhanced provision.

Daily Phonics and Reading

Phonics are taught through the “Read Write Inc” structured program of teaching. To begin with the children are taught in 15-20 minute sessions each day, building up to 45 minute sessions in Spring term.  Through games, actions and use of flashcards and magnetic letters, learning how to say the sound (phoneme) for each letter (grapheme) and eventually move on to groups of letters like sh, ch, ee, igh (digraphs and trigraphs). They learn to hear and say the sounds in words like c-a-t by pulling them apart (segmenting) and putting them back together (blending).  These skills are then applied to their reading. Children will read texts that are matched to their phonic ability, with the support of staff and independently.

There are also opportunities in the Read Write Inc sessions for writing the sounds, focusing on letter formation and building words and sentences.

Home Reading

All children will bring home a sharing book for you to share and read to them. This is an opportunity to foster the love for reading.  Please ensure you make this a quiet, special time such as bedtime. This is a perfect opportunity for them to hear how stories are read, engage with book and talk about the characters and events which are happening.

Later in the term your child will also bring home a school reading book.  This book is matched to their phonic ability and one that they can read independently.  On occasions they may need some support but please encourage them to read it independently and Fred talk any words they are unsure about.

Please make sure that your child reads at least 3 times a week and complete the reading record with any comments about your child’s engagement with the story and independent reading. We change reading books once a week on a friday, however your child’s reading record book needs to be in everyday as they are checked daily. Reading champion certificates are awarded for every 10 reads.

Reading Rockets

A little later in the term all children will have receive a Reading Rocket. These are words that the children have to learn by sight. The children will progress up the rockets  once they can confidently read all the words on each rocket. There are Ten rockets to get. Can you get them all?

Maths Passports

Again, later in the term all children have a math’s passport.  This is to encourage families to work together on the challenges and you can see the end of reception expectations.  Please encourage your child to  practice a challenge at a time, for 5 minutes at least 3 times a week.  This will develop good number fluency.
